Introduction

The Virtual Appliance is a Virtual Machine including a hardware configuration based on the Arkeia Physical Appliance.
The free edition of the Arkeia Virtual Appliance for VMware includes Arkeia Network Backup Software with a limited FREE user license.

The Arkeia Virtual Appliance for VMware enables enterprises to leverage the capabilities of virtual environments while taking advantage of the unique features included in the all-in-one system. This allows enterprises to benefit from features such as high-availability, load-balancing, and storage provisioning that are already integrated into various virtualization platforms.

Your Free Use license keys will be sent to the email address provided after the Registration process has been completed. This license key will allow you to use the free use edition of the Arkeia Virtual Appliance for VMware on a VMware ESX or ESXi server with the backup of one hypervisor using the vStorage API to a 250GB DiskStorage as well as to tape. This license is for personal or commercial use and is limited to one license per company.

250 GB Disk Storage (backup to disk)

Type-3 Client Agent

The included Type-3 (T3) Client Agent license will allow you to activate the vStorage agent and backup the backup server.

Configuration Example:

* Type-3 (T3) Client License = used to backup the backup server
* vStorage License = used to backup one vStorage Hypervisor

Arkeia vStorage License

vStorage Backup

One Arkeia vStorage License is required for each ESX host to be backed up at the vStorage API level.
The free edition of the Arkeia Virtual Appliance for VMware includes one (1) vStorage License which allows you to backup (1) Hypervisor using the vStorage API.
The vStorage License allows you to backup an unlimited amount of Virtual Machines residing on the Hypervisor.

Example
If you have ten ESX hosts, and you only want to backup 5 ESX hosts individually,
then you need five vStorage Licenses from Arkeia.

vCenter Backup

When using the vCenter path, you will need the quantity of vStorage Licenses of Arkeia to match the quantity of Hypervisors registered to vCenter.

Example
If you have ten Hypervisor registered to vCenter, and you want to backup using the vCenter path, then
you need ten vStorage Licenses from Arkeia.

Prerequisites

Administrator Rights

The System Administrator must have access permissions which allows him or her to add Virtual Machines.

VMware Client

VMware Infrastructure Client 2.5 or higher

Hardware and Disk Space

A server compatible with VMware ESX or ESXi Server and a minimum of 254 GB of disk space.

Supported Platforms

The Arkeia Virtual Appliance is supported on the following platforms:

VMware ESX Server
VMware ESXi Server
VMware vSphere 4
VMware vSphere 5

Hardware Configuration

The Arkeia Virtual Appliance for VMware hardware configuration includes the following.

2 GB of Memory
1 64-bit CPU
1 64-bit Arkeia Appliance Firmware
1 Network Adapter: VMXNET1
1 SCSI Controller: LSI Logic
VMware Hardware Version 4
Hard Disk 1: 4 GB: used for the OS
Hard Disk 2: 250 GB: mostly used for the Arkeia database, Index and the first Disk Storage.

The SCSI controller manages the 2 Hard disks and is able to handle any external tape drive or tape library that the ESX server can access (direct SCSI, iSCSI, SAN, ...).
D2T is therefore possible.

The network adapter's MAC address is generated automatically by VMware hypervisor when the AVA is started for the first time.

Performance Options

The Arkeia v9.1 Virtual Appliance is delivered as a VMware appliance using Hardware Version 4 with VMXNET1 and LSI SCSI controller.
It runs out of the box on ESXi 3 as well ESXi 4 and 5.

Some customers have reported increased performance after upgrading
the v9.1 Virtual Appliance default configurations using the following settings

* Upgrade Virtual Hardware 4 to Virtual Hardware 7 or 8
* Change from VMXNET1 to VMXNET3 for the Network Adapter
* Change from LSI Logic to the Paravirtualized SCSI Controller

Power On The Virtual Machine

After the Virtual Machine has been deployed, it must be powered on.

Select the Arkeia Virtual Appliance
Click "Power On the Virtual Machine"

Network Connection

The Arkeia Appliance needs to be configured for the network, either statically or by a DHCP server with:

  • IP Address Configuration
    • IP (v4) Address
    • Subnet Mask
    • Broadcast Address
    • Gateway
    • Machine Name (optional, if set in the DHCP server)
    • DNS (optional, if obtained from the DHCP server)
    • List of Hosts

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Not setting the Gateway could result in a (Error 113: Not Route to host) when trying to connect to client machines.

DHCP Network Connection

Arkeia highly recommends using a static IP address assignment for all backup appliances.

If your network uses a DHCP server, start the Virtual Appliance and open the console window. The Virtual Appliance will wait for one minute to receive a DHCP response. Once it has received an IP address it will display it on screen once the system has finished booting. If no DHCP response is received it will revert to the default IP address of 10.10.10.10.

Obtain the IP Address

Obtain the IP Address of the Virtual Appliance

Select the running Virtual Appliance
Click on the "Summary Tab" to obtain the IP Address of the Virtual Appliance
You can also view the IP Address by clicking on the "Console Tab"

Static IP Address Connection

If a DHCP server is not used, a static IP address can be given to the Virtual Appliance before it is connected to the network.
The web interface can be accessed by connecting to https://10.10.10.10 in your local browser after a temporary route has been created.

Create Temporary Route to 10.10.10.10

In the case that a DHCP server is not used, you will need to create a route to 10.10.10.10 to be able to access the web interface.
Add the route to a Virtual machine that is connected to the same Virtual switch where the Virtual Appliance is connected.
If this Virtual machine is running Windows, with an IP 192.168.0.1, the following command will create the route:

MS Windows Command
Add Route: route add 10.10.10.10 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.1
Remove Route: route delete 10.10.10.10
Linux Command
Add Route: route add 10.10.10.10 dev eth0
Remove Route: route del 10.10.10.10

First Login / Password Defaults

The Arkeia Appliance is configured in two parts consisting of Backup Software and Appliance System.
Each section has a separate superuser and password.

PASSWORD DEFAULTS:

SNMPwalk Test

Below are a few examples of a remote SNMP Monitoring server querying the Arkeia Appliance.
"snmp-utils" is not installed on the Arkeia Appliance so these commands must be executed from a separate server.

The command takes a single OID, and will display a list of all the results which lie within the subtree rooted on this OID:

# /usr/bin/snmpwalk -v 2c -c public 192.168.1.6 system
